Q. Machiavelli was usually considered a supporter of republics. In 1512 he started writing the Discourses on Livy (a pro-republic text) and a year late, for the new prince Lorenzo II, wrote the Prince (pro-monarchy). Why would he contradict himself and write the Prince, and support a monarchy?
