Titus Livius (59 BC – AD 17), known as Livy in English, was a Roman historian who wrote a monumental history of Rome and the Roman people, Ab Urbe Condita Libri, "Chapters from the Foundation of the City," covering the period from the earliest legends of Rome well before the traditional foundation in 753 BC through the reign of Augustus in Livy's own time. He was on familiar terms with the Julio-Claudian family, advising Augustus' grandnephew, the future emperor Claudius, as a young man not long before 14 AD in a letter to take up the writing of history. Livy and Augustus' wife, Livia, were from the same clan in different locations, although not related by blood. ContentsFrom Wikipedia under the

Q. Asked by Caitlin - Mon May 17 22:52:37 2010 - History - 1 Answers - Comments A. Livy had access to the State Archives when he was compiling his 'History of Rome.' As many of those records are now lost to us, most Classical scholars and historians tend to take Livy at face value, as his work is the surviving source closest in time to early Roman history and was compiled from primary source documents (or so Livy tells us). However, it should be remembered that Livy's work was no mere historical narrative, but a moral treatise designed as instruction for Romans of his own day in how Rome had declined morally, and how the path back was to follow the example of Romans from the history of the Republic, particularly the early Republic.Livy got access to the State Archives because Augustus, emperor when Livy began his… [cont.] Answered by ammianus - Tue May 18 04:00:10 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "livy" |
