Publius Vergilius Maro (also known by the Anglicised forms of his name as Virgil or Vergil) (October 15, 70 BCE – September 21, 19 BCE) was a classical Roman poet, best known for three major works—the Eclogues (or Bucolics), the Georgics, and the Aeneid—although several minor poems are also attributed to him.

The son of a farmer, Virgil came to be regarded as one of Rome's greatest poets. His Aeneid can be considered a national epic of Rome and has been extremely popular from its publication to the present day.

Q. How does Vergil's extended simile in Book 1 of his Aeneid connect to the first century BC Roman happenings?

A. I would guess you are referring to the extended simile of the statesman calming the agitated crowd, which begins at line 148 and is the first extended simile of the epic. In the Aeneid the characteristic virtue of the main character (Aeneas) is pietas (pius Aeneas). Pietas is respect for common decency, especially the common decencies of one's fatherland. There had been repeated attempts at coup d'etats (Catiline's in particular) and the country had lurched in and out of civil war. When Octavian (Augustus) emerged as one of the two main Roman leaders, after he and Mark Antony had defeated Julius… [cont.]
