A historian is an individual who studies and writes about history, and is regarded as an authority on it. Historians are concerned with the continuous, methodical narrative and research of past events as relating to the human race; as well as the study of all events in time. If the individual is concerned with events preceding written history, the individual is an historian of prehistory. Although "historian" can be used to describe amateur and professional historians alike, it is reserved more recently for those who have acquired graduate degrees in the discipline. Some historians, though, are recognized by equivalent training and experience in the field. "Historian" became a professional occupation in the late nineteenth century at roughly the same time that physicians also set standards for who could enter the field.

Q. I want people to know my name. Not famous maybe but definately well known. Can a historian be famous (while she's alive) at all? What about a scientist? Or do I need to be in the arts to become well known? Thanks.

A. Attempt to find any type of hard evidence on the event by using texts [if any have been written about it], news media, [all 'sides' or 'opinions'], talk to any who happened to have been at this event, participated in it, or was alive when it happened, [if at all possible]. Travel to the place where the event happened [if possible]. Use your search engine With books, texts, interviews, media, all of this is called 'reasearch' and that is what is most important in documenting, correctly, and 'event'. isis1037@yahoo.com

  • The end of history is, alas, also the end of the dustbins of history. There are no longer any dustbins for disposing of old ideologies, old regimes, old values. Where are we going to throw Marxism, which actually invented the dustbins of history? (Yet there is some justice here since the very people who invented them have fallen in.) Conclusion: if there are no more dustbins of history, this is because History itself has become a dustbin. It has become its own dustbin, just as the planet itself is becoming its own dustbin.
  • Papa Hegel he say that all we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history. I know people who can't even learn from what happened this morning. Hegel must have been taking the long view.
  • I don’t know much about history, and I wouldn’t give a nickel for all the history in the world. It means nothing to me. History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker's damn is the history we make today.
